That is pretty. Why do bridges need little houses over them though?

My second son tells me that the covers are to keep the floor boards of the bridges protected from the winter winds and snow.
and the roof is pitched to keep weight of the snow off the bridge.
Which is VERY handy because tonight we're getting up to 15cm.
